Farm girls | Editorial in Iceland

Fashion and beauty photography in Iceland

I am born and raised in a small town up north in Iceland. My town has around 2500 people and a beautiful view over the ocean and three small islands poking out of the ocean by the horizon.

In the last year or so I have wanted to do an editorial in my home town, something that connects me to my roots. Something that shows the beauty of Iceland in a different way. My grandparents live right outside of the town on their small farm, where my dad and his siblings where born and raised they have horses, chickens, and sheep. On the farm where my mom is born, they have a lot of animals such as chickens, cows, horses and a lot of dogs

Thoughts and back story

My parents were both born and raised on a farm, so as a young girl I spent a lot of time with my grandparents and all the animals. Inspired by the walks with the cows, and the hours spent playing with the dogs I decided to photograph models with all the different animals I could find in my area. Therefore, because of the personal connection to this project, I only chose models that I knew and were born in the same town as me. I have a connection to every single one of them, for example, one of them has been my next-door neighbor since we were around five and one of them is my little sister.

A few weeks before I flew to Iceland, I was shopping with my mom who had come to visit me in London. While showing her around I noticed that in almost every single clothing store I went into selling a boiler suit. Those suits are exactly what my grandmas wore on the farm when working. As a result, I talked to my boyfriend’s mom, who lives on a farm, and asked to borrow her farm suits and I did the same with my grandmother. I styled the models in real farm clothes, that were at the same time in style. I added accessories and makeup to finish the whole look.

Just a small-town girl

Being back in my small town, where everyone knows each other helped me a lot. I called a few people and got four different locations to shoot, and five different animals.

To begin with, on the first day, I shot my first three girls. We started with the horses, then we went to the sheep, and the last animal that day were the chickens. Next, we drove to the only farm in the area that has goats. On the third day, we photographed a cow and the dogs.

I loved every single minute from this shoot, photographing five different models with five different animals. It was a challenge, but worth it!
